When the Calliope Blew, Louisville Knew the Showboat Had Arrived

The Calliope staff · September 1, 2026

Long before email blasts and LED marquees, Louisville heard its theatre news on the water. Showboats working the Ohio River carried a steam calliope: a keyboard of whistles loud enough to clear a bend in the river and tell the city a company had come to port.

This site takes that instrument as its name and its job. The Calliope is here to signal what is on stage now, what is coming, and who is auditioning — from Actors Theatre on Main Street to Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville and the park amphitheaters up and down the river.

We will keep the listings local, the news specific, and the ads in their lanes so you can still read a review without losing the plot.
